Our Applemore House

The Applemore House system was born out of a desire to reward our students for their achievements in all areas across the college, as well as to introduce a greater sense of belonging to our community in a way that spanned all year groups and interests.

The Houses have become embedded in daily life here at Applemore but we never forget where the names came from and what they represent. We believe that ‘Moving Forward Together’ reflects the spirit of our local past and shows our determined approach to success, sometimes through  adversity but always echoing  the spirit of achieving all that is humanly possible! The House system is now in its fourth year and is a vibrant and thriving part of college life.

Like any four year old, it craves new experiences so this year, we have added a greater range of challenges, activities and rewards that stretch across all subject areas, as well as including the broad range of individual talents and skills that our students bring with them. It is the perfect platform to try something new, share a skill or talent with others or develop in any area where confidence lacks with the support of fellow House members and staff. Yes, the staff too, are in Houses and join in with the students as fellow competitors whilst maintaining their position as superb role models and mentors.

Your son or daughter, when they start here, will be placed in one of our four houses and will be immediately become a recognisable part of our community as their school tie will display the colour of their House.

Students are awarded House points in lessons for their positive attitude towards their learning as well as for effort and achievement. They will also be able to take part in a variety of activities such as:

  • weekly quizzes (all of which enhance knowledge of the world and life outside of college)
  • inter-house challenges, which include a variety of sporting events as well as academic topics
  • music and drama
  • creative and design tasks (we recently redesigned our college made entirely from Lego)
  • cooking, building, sewing, origami, chess,
  • photography;   as well as many other tasks and activities that can earn House points and

celebrate individual skills, whilst enhancing the importance of team work and support. This year, each House is also adopting a local charity to support need in our own local community. The House Captains are already planning fund raising events so watch this space.

Our House system is fluid and constantly evolving, which means that it is extremely successful in motivating our students on a daily basis. It allows personal growth in terms of the opportunities to become a Captain or a Vice-Captain with responsibilities in leadership, it allows healthy competition whilst teaching the art of being both a winner and a runner-up and it demonstrates that reward, positivity and support far out-weigh giving up in tough times encouraging resilience and stamina.

Each term, the winning House enjoy a special treat and that could involve anything from a trip out or a pool and pizza party as part of the school day. Smaller rewards are offered both individually and as part of the whole House reward scheme as a “well done” and “thank you” for all the effort that we expect our students to put in.

We look forward to welcoming your child in to our House system and watching them grow and develop in confident and successful young adults.
