âť“ Frequently Asked Questions
What are my options after Year 11?
• Attend a Further Education College
• Start an Apprenticeship or Traineeship
What courses are available?
At FE Colleges:
• Academic A Levels
• Vocational BTEC Diplomas
At Sixth Form Colleges:
• Academic A Levels
• Some vocational options
What do the course levels mean?
• Level 1 = GCSE Grades 1–3
• Level 2 = GCSE Grades 4–9
• Level 3 = A Levels / BTEC Diploma
• Level 4 = Higher National Certificate / Foundation Degree
• Level 5 = Higher National Diploma / Undergraduate Degree
Can I apply for both college and apprenticeships?
Yes! But once you accept an apprenticeship, you’ll sign a contract and won’t be able to attend a separate college course (except the one linked to your apprenticeship).
When should I apply?
• Best time to apply: Autumn Term (September–December)
• Some colleges (e.g. Peter Symonds, Sparsholt) have early deadlines in December — check their websites for details.
How do I apply to college?
• Visit the college’s website and follow their application process.
• You don’t need to be 100% sure of your course — this can be discussed at your interview.
• You’ll need to write a personal statement.
Can I accept multiple offers?
Yes — you can accept several offers and make your final decision on Enrolment Day.
What happens on Results Day?
• You’ll find out if you’ve met the entry requirements for your chosen course.
• If not, don’t worry — colleges will support you in finding a suitable alternative.
• Careers advisors will also be available to help.
Do I need specific courses for university?
• Not usually. Only a few courses (e.g. medicine, dentistry, veterinary science) require specific A Levels.
• Always check university websites or ask during your careers interview.
What happens after I apply?
• You’ll receive confirmation of your application.
• You’ll be invited to an interview (some may be online).
• Brockenhurst College interviews are usually held at Applemore.
Who can support me?
• Your Tutor
• Your Head of Year
• Ms Charrett (Careers Lead)
• Mr I Champney (Careers Advisor)
• Unifrog platform
• Your parents or carers
Do I have to pay for college?
• Education is free for 16–18 year olds.
• You may need to pay for transport or specialist equipment (e.g. uniforms, tools).
Can I mix academic and vocational courses?
• In theory, yes — but timetabling may limit your options. Check with the college.
